What
is distance learning?
Distance Learning is two-way, interactive communications between sites via ISDN lines and television cameras. We can have dual-credit or college-level courses – taught live by the college professors. We can see art from a museum in another state – or even another country – and have museum personnel lecture. We can videoconference with a class in another school, or take part in a joint project with that class. We can learn about endangered species, the rain forest, the International Apace Station, etc. – form an expert in the field.
WHO is your contact person?
Serena Smesny is the Distance Learning Site Facilitator for our district. You can contact her by email or telephone. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about Distance Learning. ssmesny@barbershill.isd.esc4.net 281-576-2221 ext. 5288
WHERE is the Distance Learning Lab?
The lab is located at the High School, upstairs in room B210. All classes who schedule Distance Learning Programs will come to this lab. If you are at another campus a bus will provide transportation.
WHEN can I have my class participate in Distance Learning?
It all depends on the type of program you want. As you’ll find on the following program descriptions from various vendors, some have “set” dates and times to which we must adhere, and others will accommodate your scheduling needs. Check the descriptions carefully to find out when programs are available. Also note that some require as much as 4 weeks notice.
HOW do I request a Distance Learning program for my class?
Once you’ve found a program you’d like, just notify Serena (the DL facilitator) and give her your preferred date and time to have this program. It is best to have a backup date/time, or even a “window” of dates to better your chances of successfully booking a program. Serena will then contact the program provider and set up scheduling with them. Once we have you on the vendor’s schedule, Serena will get back with you and your campus principal for approval and transportation arrangements. |
